SCULPTRA

WHAT IS SCULPTRA?

Sculptra is an injectable collagen stimulator made with poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a biocompatible and biodegradable material. Rather than simply adding volume, Sculptra works gradually by stimulating your body’s natural collagen production. When used strategically, Sculptra can:

  • Restore lost volume

  • Stimulate natural collagen production

  • Improve skin firmness and thickness

  • Soften the appearance of wrinkles and folds

  • Create a more youthful, refreshed appearance

Sculptra is different from traditional dermal fillers because it works gradually, helping your body rebuild its own collagen over time. Treatment is customized to your individual anatomy and goals to create natural-looking, long-lasting results.

HOW DOES SCULPTRA WORK?

Sculptra works by gradually stimulating your body’s own collagen production, helping restore the structure and support that naturally diminish with age. Made with poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), Sculptra is injected strategically beneath the skin, where it works over time to encourage the production of new collagen. As collagen levels increase, the skin can appear firmer, smoother, and more supported, while areas of lost facial volume are gradually restored.

The result isn’t a “different” face, but a more balanced, refreshed version of your own. Because Sculptra works with your body rather than simply adding immediate volume, results develop gradually and can look soft and natural. This makes Sculptra an ideal option for women who want subtle, elegant rejuvenation and a refreshed appearance without looking overdone.

WHAT AREAS CAN BE TREATED?

Sculptra can be used to treat various areas of the face where collagen and volume naturally diminish over time, helping restore structure and improve overall skin quality. Common treatment areas include:

  • Cheeks – to restore volume and support youthful contour

  • Temples – to improve hollowing and restore balanced facial proportions

  • Lower face – to restore support and soften the appearance of age-related volume loss

  • Jawline – to improve overall definition and support

  • Jawline – to create definition and structure

  • Nasolabial folds – to soften the appearance of folds by restoring underlying

  • Marionette area – to improve the appearance of shadows and volume loss around the mouth

  • Overall facial rejuvenation – to improve skin firmness, volume, and facial harmony

Because Sculptra works by stimulating your body’s natural collagen production, treatment is customized based on your facial structure, areas of volume loss, and desired results. Your provider will develop a treatment plan designed to create gradual, natural-looking rejuvenation that complements your unique features.

What To Expect During Your Appointment

Is Sculptra Right for Me?

Sculptra may be a good option for women who are beginning to notice facial volume loss, changes in skin firmness, or a gradual loss of youthful facial structure. Because Sculptra works by stimulating your own collagen production, it is especially appealing to those who prefer subtle, gradual rejuvenation rather than an immediate change.

  • Noticeable facial volume loss

  • Loss of skin firmness or elasticity

  • Hollowing in areas such as the cheeks or temples

  • A desire for gradual, natural-looking rejuvenation

  • A preference for collagen stimulation rather than immediate added volume

Every face is different, and Sculptra is not the right treatment for everyone. During your consultation, your provider will evaluate your facial anatomy, concerns, and goals to determine whether Sculptra—or another treatment—may be the best option for you.

While Sculptra and traditional dermal fillers can both help restore a more youthful appearance, they work in different ways. Most traditional fillers add immediate volume and can be used to precisely contour and enhance specific features. Sculptra takes a more gradual approach by stimulating your body’s natural collagen production.

Neither option is inherently better—they simply serve different purposes. Depending on your anatomy and goals, Sculptra, dermal fillers, or a combination of treatments may be recommended to create balanced, natural-looking results.

  • stimulates collagen production for gradual restoration

  • stimulates collagen production for gradual restoration

  • focuses on gradual, overall rejuvenation

  • provide immediate volume, contour, and support

  • results are typically visible immediately after treatment

  • can provide precise enhancement of specific features

Pre-Treatment Instructions

To ensure the safest and most refined results:

  • Schedule your Sculptra treatment at least 2 weeks before special events which you may be attending, such as wedding or a vacation. Bruising and swelling may be apparent in that time period.

  • Hydrate well in the days leading up to treatment.

  • Avoid Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Advil, St. John's Wort, oral Vitamin E, fish oil and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) in the 48-72 hours prior to your treatment as they may increase the risk of bruising and bleeding in the injection area.

  • If you are currently taking anti-coagulation medications (Warfarin, Coumadin, Heparin, Lovenox, Enoxaparin, Lepirudin, Refludan, Ticlopidine Ticlid, Clopidogrel, Plavix, Tirofiban, Aggrastat, Eptifibatide, Integrilin), discuss the use of these medications with your healthcare provider prior to your treatment. You may or may not be a candidate for treatment with Sculptra.

  • If you are prone to cold sores (oral herpes simplex), take your prescribed medication (Famvir, Famciclovir, Valtrex, Valacyclovir, Acyclovir) as prescribed in the 24 hours prior to your treatment.

  • Eat a small meal or snack before your appointment to avoid lightheadedness.

  • Do NOT consume alcoholic beverages at least 24 hours prior to procedure (alcohol may increase the risk of bruising).

  • Arrive to your appointment with clean skin (no makeup, lotion, sunscreen, or oils).

For optimal results and minimal side effects:

  • HAVE AN ICE PACK READY: Within the first 24 hours of treatment, apply a cloth-wrapped ice pack to the treated area for a few minutes at a time. Never apply ice or ice pack directly to the skin. The cold will help reduce swelling.

  • MASSAGING : Massage the treated area in a circular motion for 5 minutes 5 times a day for 5 days after treatment as recommended by your physician

  • AVOID EXCESS SUNLIGHT AND UV EXPOSURE: Protecting your skin from the sun is always important, but after treatment, excessive sunlight and UV exposure should be avoided until any initial swelling and redness go away. Your provider will provide guidelines on sunscreen protection and how to avoid excessive sunlight.

  • Worsening or prolonged symptoms or signs of complication such as redness, swelling, bruising, or hematoma should be reported to the health care provider.

  • Your health care provider will assess the need for additional Sculptra treatments after at least three to four weeks.

  • Treatment with Sculptra can result in small subcutaneous nodules in the treated area. These subcutaneous papules are typically asymptomatic, invisible, and noticed only by touch. Visible nodules, sometimes with redness or color change to the skin, have been reported. Patients should report these events and any other side effects to their health care provider.

  • Avoid facials, laser procedures, microneedling, dermabrasion, waxing, and dermaplaning for 2 weeks.

  • Avoid vigorous scrubs, exfoliation or facial procedures in the area of treatment for 72 hours.

  • Do not do heavy aerobic exercise or use sauna for 48-72 hours.

  • Avoid applying makeup on the day of the treatment.

  • For pain/discomfort, use cool packs and over-the-counter analgesics such as Acetaminophen (Tylenol) 325-650 mg, every 4-6 hours as needed.

  • Oral or topical Arnica Montana, an herbal supplement, may help reduce swelling caused by cosmetic treatments. DO NOT take Arnica Montana if you have liver or kidney problems.

  • Avoid Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Advil, St. John's Wort, oral Vitamin E, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) due to increased risk of bruising and bleeding in the injection area.

  • If you are prone to cold sores (oral herpes simplex), take your prescribed medication (Famvir, Famciclovir, Valtrex, Valacyclovir, Acyclovir) as prescribed for 5 days after your treatment.

  • DO NOT schedule dental procedures for 2 weeks after treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will I see results?

Sculptra results develop gradually as your body produces new collagen. Some initial fullness after treatment may be related to the treatment itself and temporary swelling, while the longer-term improvement develops progressively over the following weeks and months.

How long do results last?

Sculptra is designed to provide long-lasting results as new collagen develops. Individual results vary, and maintenance treatments may be recommended to help preserve your results over time.

Does Sculptra Look Natural?
Yes. Because Sculptra works gradually by stimulating your own collagen production, the goal is a subtle, natural-looking improvement rather than an immediately noticeable change in volume.

Is Sculptra painful?

Topical numbing creams are applied prior to injections. Additional comfort measures can be used during treatment to help make the experience as comfortable as possible. Your provider will discuss what to expect and the options available to you before treatment.

What is the downtime after treatment?

Most people return to normal activities right away. Mild swelling, redness, or bruising can occur and typically resolves within a few days. We provide detailed aftercare instructions to support a smooth recovery.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments varies from person to person. Many patients receive a series of treatments, with the exact number and timing determined by your provider based on your individual goals and degree of volume loss.

Are Sculptra treatments safe?

Yes. Sculptra has been FDA approved since 2004 with expansion of approval in 2009 and 2023. When performed by a trained medical professional, Sculptra is considered very safe. As with any medical procedure, risks exist, but they are minimized through proper assessment, sterile technique, and precise injection methods.

Can Sculptra be dissolved if I don't like the results?

Unlike hyaluronic acid dermal fillers, Sculptra cannot be dissolved with an injectable reversal agent. Sculptra works by stimulating your body’s natural collagen production, so the results develop gradually and are not immediately reversible. Because of this, careful treatment planning and conservative, individualized placement are important. Your provider will discuss your goals and develop a treatment plan designed to create natural-looking results that complement your features.
